Hope

Caelora. Furore had grown sick of the peaceful village after it had become clear its inhabitants resented her. Yet when she landed in the square next to The Amiciers’ Rest, late at night, she couldn’t resist grinning.

She liked knowing she wouldn’t have to leave the village to find the last couples she’d personally assisted with their problematic love lives. Not to mention, Hope was bound to welcome her like she’d welcome any guest. Venviel and Hymn had abandoned her, sure, but Hope was a true believer.

She may not have coin to rent a room, unless she popped by her temple in Lho Allanar, but she could trade in wishes. They would be grateful for whatever she could give them. And honestly, she could give them a great deal if they presented her with the right material.

She only needed them to say that she’d improved their lives, so she could spread the word to Rhabour, and then she would leave them in peace. No more mishaps. No more interfering in their lives. They only had to thank her.

Furore groaned in displeasure. Yeah, that would happen. She realized none of them thought highly of her after everything they’d endured. She could try to convince herself that they owed her, that they must bow and scrape and show gratitude, but she didn’t even fool herself. They would never demean themselves for her.

Hope thought of her as a false goddess to this day, despite how she continued to pray to the goddess of love. Venviel would impale her on another blade, or arrow, like Leyla and Syvis had done. It might be entertaining to watch Hymn run from her, yet after Gale’s death, she imagined the surviving twin wouldn’t move.

No, Hymn would punch her in the face, spit on her, and kick her in the groin. Iorvil might be her best bet for a civilized conversation, and only because the woman had never worshipped her. She’d never been loyal to any other god than Rhabour.

Furore knew the couples lived in different homes, but she figured she may as well begin in the tavern, so she strode around the building, listened outside its door for voices, and entered when she heard none.

A couple of pirates had fallen asleep at their tables, but other than those, the tavern lay empty. She was surprised Hope and Venviel trusted their patrons to the point where they didn’t even lock their bottles in for the night. Anyone could wander downstairs from their room and steal their preferred drink of choice.

A loud crash resounded from the kitchen, like someone had dropped a plate. She donned her disguise of a dark-skinned sailor elf, snuck past the tables, and stopped by the door to the kitchen to peek inside.

Hope glared between the shards of the plate and Venviel. Furore detected fury in her hypnotizing, blank eyes. She’d not seen Hope enraged, ever, as far as she could recall.

“What?” Venviel asked, crossed her legs, and leaned against a counter. “Are you the only
